The herpes simplex virus is categorised into two different groups HSV-1 (herpes simplex type 1) and HSV-2 (herpes simplex type 2). It can be recognised by visible lesions on the mouth, genitals or anus. It is mainly transmitted through direct contact with the skin and mucous membranes (kissing or, more generally, through sexual relations). Dr Bouba Camara-Sampil shed light on these two types of herpes, and their methods of transmission along with their characteristic symptoms.
